Remembering Chip Conyers, a Protestant Saint

Chip Conyers embodied—like none other whom I’ve ever known—the central Christian belief that we are already living in the New Age, that the Kingdom of God is not an idealistic hope to be realized in some far-off time but a present reality.

South African Churches Reject Anti-Immigrant Violence

In the last weeks of August 2019, Nwanyieze, an immigrant from Nigeria, fell ill and couldn’t open her corner restaurant in a mall in the central district of Johannesburg. Normally she would have been selling Nigerian delicacies—such as traditional egusi and ogbono soups—but her poor health kept her at home when a wave of anti-immigrant Read more... What Is the Fruit of Gentleness?

To many, the idea of gentleness conveys a wimpy form of Christianity. Yet gentleness, the penultimate quality of the listed fruit that the Holy Spirit produces in our lives, needs consideration. We learn from Scripture that it is essential to the life of the Christian, the leadership of the church, and the love of Christ. A Fruit Essential to the Life of the Christian The word translated gentleness in Galatians 5:22–23 means “meekness, mildness of disposition, tenderness in spirit.” The word James uses to describe the gentleness of heavenly wisdom means “reasonable, equitable, patiently hearing and deciding on a matter, not overly strict” (James 3:17). These qualities must be present in the life of the believer. Their absence indicates the presence of an evil substitute. Have you considered what opposes gentleness? According to Scripture, unrighteous anger is its antithesis. The fruit of the Spirit is contrasted with the deeds of the flesh. These are “enmity, strife, jealousy, fits

5 Ways to Treat Your Wife Like She Is Still Your Girlfriend

As someone who spends too much time in airports, I have a lot of time to people-watch. When I see a couple who look to be older than 35 being fun, flirtatious, and attentive with each other, I think, I bet they aren’t married. And this is one of the few times I don’t want […] The post 5 Ways to Treat Your Wife Like She Is Still Your Girlfriend appeared first on All Pro Dad.

How Are We Supposed to “Die to Sin”?

May we never rationalize our sin as a way to display more of God’s grace. To do so is to misunderstand God’s grace, at best, and exploit it, at worst.

The Bookshelf: When Words Are Deeds

The nation’s semiquincentennial, which we marked on July 4, was the occasion for a number of new books about the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. I’m sure I’ll get around to reading some of those in future—if they’re good, they’re durable—but lately I’ve been revisiting some older works on the subject that still hold up. I’ll get to those in a moment, but first I want to consider what we have been celebrating this year.
