Time Immemorial

The stubborn persistence of time immemorial in a time when it should, by rights, long ago have ceased to be in constitutional law, tells us something crucial about what binds a community to its law. We should listen.

The US is banning foreign robots

The Chinese robot maker, Unitree, will likely be impacted by the ban. | Bloomberg via Getty Images The US government is targeting China with a new import ban on "advanced robotic devices" and power inverters made in foreign countries, as reported earlier by Reuters. In an announcement on Tuesday, the Federal Communications Commission says the ban will include "mobile" robots, such as humanoid and quadruped models - but it is not limited to robots that walk around. Though the FCC says the move isn't targeted at a specific country, it will have a major impact on China as the country ramps up efforts to produce humanoid robots, some of which we've seen in viral videos stumbling to Michael Jackson, partaking in MMA fights, and even appearing … Read the full story at The Verge.

Iran launches missiles at U.S. base in Jordan

Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles toward a U.S. military base in Jordan on Tuesday in what U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) described as an "attempted surprise attack." All of the missiles were intercepted, CENTCOM said in a statement. Why it matters: This marks Iran's first ballistic missile attack against a U.S. base in the region since President Trump paused strikes against Iran last Friday to give diplomacy another chance. The attack threatens to unravel the fragile pause and could force Trump to decide whether to resume military action against Iran. State of play: CENTCOM said forces from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched the missiles at 5:45 p.m. ET. "U.S. forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness," the command said. The big picture: Iran targeted the same country where two U.S. service members were killed in a missile and drone barrage earlier this month, prompting Trump to intensify his 13-night campaign of strikes. The union drive at the Wikimedia Foundation is expanding

In June, UK staff at the nonprofit that runs Wikipedia became the first to announce their intentions to form a union. Now, US-based employees at the Wikimedia Foundation are joining the union drive, but management at the nonprofit have declined to voluntarily recognize their union. "While the Wikimedia Foundation touts to the public that they plan to take a neutral stance in our organizing efforts, they have already proven that not to be the case behind the scenes," a press release sent by Communications Workers of America, with which Wiki Workers United is affiliated, reads in part.
